First Year Design Project

The First Year Design Project is the design-and-build project component of the Fundamentals of Engineering sequence. There are currently two versions of the design project offered, the Integrated Transportation System (ITS) and the Advanced Energy Vehicle (AEV).

The ITS Project incorporates the entrepreneurial development process into a design-and-build project. Students are tasked to develop a system that solves a problem, creating economic and/or social value. After developing a real life system, students model their system using provided vehicle components to validate their designs.

The AEV Project is an energy and environment design-and-build project that challenges first-year engineering students to create an autonomous electric vehicle transportation system. These vehicles are the result of their semester-long design-build project, focusing on using advanced energy concepts and energy management to successfully address a real-world transportation scenario modeled after Smart Columbus.

First Year Design Showcase

The First Year Design Showcase will feature poster presentations from ITS and AEV project teams, along with a live competition to determine which vehicles are the best engineered and best performing. The university community and the public are welcome to attend. Visitors will have the opportunity to interact with the student teams and the Department of Engineering Education faculty and staff.
