November 12, 2019, 12:00-1:30pm; Professional Development Series: How to Succeed as a Mentor at the Barbie Tootle Room - 3rd floor Ohio Union: Graduate and professional students are in a unique position in which they may have mentors critical to their success and may also serve as mentors to other graduate and professional students or undergraduate students. Sometimes you may find yourself in the position as a mentor because someone picked you as their mentor. Even if you are not yet a mentor, you will likely have the opportunity in the future. Learning how to be a successful mentor now will also help you navigate the relationship with your current or future mentors. Join OUAB Grad/Prof for a workshop that will cover the following topics: how to establish a successful mentorship, skills useful to maintaining a positive mentorship, and tips for serving as a mentor. November 19, 2019, 3:30- 5:00pm; Academic Job Search Series: The On-Campus Interview at Senate Chamber - 2nd floor Ohio Union: Career Counseling and Support Services will be presenting an interview skills workshop. The focus of the Workshop will be on being proactive in the interview so that students feel that they have control over what is being communicated and strategies for answering specific questions that are commonly asked. November 26, 2019, 3:30- 5:00pm; Academic Job Search Series: Negotiating the Job Offer at Senate Chamber - 2nd floor Ohio Union: Learn what to do when a search committee is prepared to offer you a faculty position. We’ll provide strategies for responding to a department’s offer, share some of the common elements of job offers around which candidates might negotiate, and introduce approaches that can help both parties—the job candidate and the hiring department—communicate effectively throughout the process of negotiation. November 27, 2019, 12:00-1:30pm; Wellness Series: Stereotype Threats & Microaggressions at the Barbie Tootle Room - 3rd Floor Ohio Union: Can you recall an experience when someone questioned your ability or affiliation because of a personal characteristic such as race, gender, or primary language? Have you ever feared that if you did not succeed, you would confirm a largely held stereotype about a demographic group to which you belong? Have you wondered how to address stereotype threat or microaggressions? In this presentation, participants will learn about stereotype threat and microaggressions research, how to identify them when they occur, and develop ideas around interrupting and counteracting them.
